Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI)
At Ysgol Maes y Llan, we use the Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) programme to give our children the best possible start in learning to read and write. RWI is a systematic phonics scheme developed by Ruth Miskin, and it helps children to learn sounds, blend them into words, and become confident, fluent readers.
What is RWI?
RWI teaches children to recognise letter sounds (phonemes) and match them to written letters (graphemes).
It shows children how to blend sounds together to read words and segment words to spell.
Children also learn to read “red words” – common words that cannot be sounded out and must be remembered by sight.
Lessons are fun, fast-paced, and interactive, keeping children engaged and motivated.
How we teach RWI
Children are assessed regularly and grouped according to their reading level.
Daily phonics sessions are taught in small groups so that teaching can be closely matched to each child’s stage of learning.
As children progress, they move up through the programme, developing fluency and comprehension.
Supporting at Home
Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting reading. You can help your child by:
Listening to them read their RWI books at home every day.
Practising speed sounds and red words sent home by school.
Sharing bedtime stories together to develop vocabulary and a love of reading.
